Magazine Covers

Nā Koa is a student-produced magazine at Kamehameha Schools Maui. When I was in high school, I designed these three covers. These covers are not only important to me because they showcase talented individuals in the Maui community, but they also symbolize the return of Nā Koa as I revived the magazine after three years of no production.

Spreads

These two spreads I designed are on the inside of their magazine covers. I really enjoy these spreads because I love the composition of the photos with the text on the left side and the layout of the contents on the right side.

I created these two spreads in high school for our school newspaper. They list where the current senior class was going to college, and the map shows how many people would be going where. Being able to create these spreads meant a lot to me because this feature of our newspaper was viewed by a lot of students.

This how-to spread was fun, yet meticulous to make. I remember wanting to play around with the layout of the photos, but I still had to ensure everything was aligned and cohesive. This went into our high school magazine on media.

This is one example of a specific section we would put in all our high school magazines called Maui Made. The purpose of the section was to showcase young experts in whatever field we were covering, and I think the layout does them justice.

These spreads depict a timeline I wrote and laid out for my high school newspaper. This timeline is important to me because it covered events that were cancelled due to COVID-19, which was big news at the time. I also feel like the way I laid it out made a somber subject more interesting, and I was able to get a lot of students involved.

Illustration

As someone who doesn't really identify as an illustrator or artist in any way, I had so much fun flexing my creative muscles while making these mandala mazes for my high school newspaper. The process of getting these in layout was so fun to me, and it taught me a lot about graphic design. I actually illustrated the mandala with pen and paper, then I took a photo of it and brought it into photoshop. In photoshop, I cleaned up the image so that it was black and white, then I erased and added lines to make the maze.
